Dollar-a-Day Update
June 21, 2009
Schoolapalooza kick-starts fund drive -- total reaches $480,000

At Schoolapalooza , community members showed up in a steady stream to made donations and buy raffle tickets. By 3 p.m., we had counted $23,000 in checks and cash.

Thank you to all community members, the Davis Downtown Business Association, the City of Davis and all participating Schoolapalooza businesses! We're grateful that you have made a stand for sustaining an excellent public education for all Davis students.

Since June 1, our Dollar-a-Day Campaign has brought in a total of $230,000. In addition, we have $250,000 in our coffers that we received between May 15, 2008, and June 1 this year.

All told, that's $480,000, a significant amount. With your help, it will continue growing toward the $1 million goal. Together, we will make a difference in our schools.

Words of inspiration

"Public access to a high quality education lies at the core of any benevolent society, and we simply cannot let our community's greatest resource fall into disrepair during our watch.

Fortunately, we have a golden opportunity to help make things right. The Davis Schools Foundation has invited us to rally as a community and donate to the Dollar-a-Day campaign to help preserve the quality and integrity of our local public school system. Money donated to this campaign will save the teachers and programs that together form the foundation of a world class learning experience.

Please do whatever you can to make the Dollar-a-Day campaign a huge success...  At stake is the education of our children, how we define ourselves as a society, and our hope for the future. "

-- John Chuck, Davis physician and father of two

How will our donations help our schools?

Salaries are the principal expense of core educational programs and services. The schools foundation and district representatives have devised a plan that will allow DSF money to be used for salaries. We agree that the greatest needs for extra funding fall into three key areas:
  • Elementary school programs
  • Secondary school programs, especially in English and math, and counseling resources
  • Staffing related to school safety, including vice principal time, counselors and custodians.
Final decision-making about how our money is spent rests with the foundation. All of our decisions are based on our mission, which is to assure district-wide educational excellence and equitable opportunities among schools.

We also sign a contract with the district that governs how our funds will be spent, and we monitor the spending through the year. Nearly 100 percent of the funds raised in last year's Dollar-a-Day Campaign were granted to the the district and paid for 25.4 teachers during 2008-09.
